Re: Best crossover for Altec 604-8G in 620 enclosure?

Hi regarding 1: I tried rebuilt standard crossovers and JM crossovers with some mundorf caps. Liked the JM better than the rebuilt standard crossover, but was not happy and was thinking of buying som russian PIOs or just selling the altecs and buy some Harbeths. I then got a hint here on the forum to check out Werner Jagusch autoformer and pio crossovers. These totally transformed my altecs, and im still wery happy with them a couple of years later.

    Thanks to you both,

Bi-amping is a bit difficult for me at the moment...

    M. Bergsson: I send an email to Werner Jagush (aka mast_mutter on ebay) as I dont quite understand his products...

He sells his crossover around 500$. Would this crossover still have the tweeters working like an attenuator? Or do I also have to buy in addition what he call autoformer? In this case it is still around 700$ plus shipping, compared to Great plains at around 200$

I dont have a lot of technical knowledge, so I dont I dont even know what PIO mean... (place it oustide?).

In fact, the best way to answer me would be to explain me your personal set up (if ever you have pictures or drawings..).

I want the best possible, but I cannot afford essays and errors, as these different crossover have to be done by a third partie. As you experienced both crossover (stock upgraded and JM upgraded) I value your experience...

Have you ever got a chance to hear the Great Plains MK3 in comparison?
    I thank you in advance.

Many modern incarnations exist, generally found as "motor run" caps where AC motors are sold.

I would advise paying the $105 for these:

    GPA N604 8A

    20

And Bill stands behind his stuff. If you're not happy, he'll get you straight.

Hi joce64, PIO has already been answered. I have not heard the GPA crossovers. And yes the Jagusch crossovers allow you to reduce the 1" compression driver output in several 1.5db steps ( if i remeber the attenuation correctly). The crossover is simple with a choke and cap on the woofer and cap and autoformer attenuation for 1" driver plus the ability to finetune the cutoff frequency (if I understood WJ correctly). As seen on the picture I also run a JBL bullet tweet, severly attenuated, from the filter with a cap in series (not in picture) as a simple filter.

Re: Best crossover for Altec 604-8G in 620 enclosure?

I have tried several. Original 604-8G's, Jeff Markwart's 604-8G's, 2nd Order Butterworth at ,500(N500),725,800, 900, 1200 Hz. The best for me either using OB or the 612C cabs is the Jeff Markwart ones. Although I admit that I tried them on a 620 enclosure and never like the sound of the 620's regardless of XO I use. But the 612C is the one for me.

Amandarae curious what you didnt like about the 620 cabinet. It seems that many recommend this size cabinet. When I have talked to Bill at GPA he always says 6.3 cubic feet for HiFi, I probably shoud have asked him what that means....

    Hello,

The 612C is ~ 24 x 28 x 19 cubic inches (about 7.3 cubic feet in volume if I am not mistaken). I tried the 620 with the 604-8G's, listen to them with a 605's and even try tried it with 416-8A's as bass bin. To me, maybe its only me and to my friends in attendance on three separate locations, it sounds boomy on the mid bass compared to the smaller 612C's. My own "experienced" is the only reason for me to keep my 612C's and let go of the chance to have the 620's instead. You should try to compare it, maybe you like the 620 better.

Abe, did you try moving the 620 cabs around to maybe reduce the boominess? What about the impletation of any bass traps in yoru room? Thanks!
